Protagonists

-Louise
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)

* Familiar: Saito Hiraga
* Age: 16
* Height: 153 cm (5')
* Three Sizes: 76/53/75
* Favorite Food: Cookberry Pie
* Hobbies: Knitting, although she does not excel in that subject.
* Special Skills: Horseback Riding
* Hates: Frogs and Kirche
* Full Name: Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière
* Runic Name: Louise the Zero, Louise of the Void
* Magical Affinity: Void

Louise is the main female character. She is a second year student at the Tristain Academy of Magic and a terrible mage who is often scorned by her fellow classmates because every spell she casts fails. She is nicknamed "Louise the Zero" after her zero magical success rate and zero attributes. This has led her to be very bitter, which is manifested in the cruel way she treats her future familiar Saito. She is the third daughter of the noble family La Vallière who owns the north-eastern territory of Tristain. Her father owns the title of Duke giving her a high rank of nobility. Typical of Rie Kugimiya's voice roles as tsundere type characters, Louise at first hates Saito, but because of various situations, grows fond of him, even having notions of love at the end of the second season.

Later in the series, it is revealed that Louise's consistent failure to perform magic based on any of the four basic attributes is because her magical affinity is in fact with the rare and powerful Void element. She is henceforth known as the Void Wizard after this discovery. Her ability as a Void Wizard relies heavily on Saito's ability as a familiar in order to protect her while casting spells. Near the end of the third season she casts off her noble status in order to save Tabitha which effectively removes her from the Vallière family but at the end of the third season for saving Tabitha, the queen of Tristain makes her second in line to the throne. She is named after Louise Françoise de La Baume Le Blanc, duchesse de La Vallière, a French noblewoman who was mistress to Louis XIV of France from 1661 to 1667.[1]

-Saito Hiraga
Voiced by: Satoshi Hino

* Age: 17
* Height: 173 cm (5'8")
* Favorite Food: Teriyaki Burgers
* Hobbies: The Internet
* Special Skills: Good with Action Games, easily adapts to changes.
* Hates: His P.E. Teacher
* Full Name: Saito Chevalier De Hiraga (his title of nobility established by Queen Henrietta - 3rd episode of Princess no Rondo)
* Weapon: Derflinger, Voiced by: Tetsuo Gotō , a sentient sword

Saito Hiraga, the main male character, is from Earth (specifically Tokyo, Japan). At the time of the summoning, he had just picked up his laptop after attempting to get it repaired in Akihabara. A portal of some kind opened in front of him; and Saito's curiosity getting the better of him, he touched it and was sucked through. At first, Saito had no idea where he was, and was thoroughly disoriented. When he arrives on the other side however he is made to sit and obey like a normal household dog. When the bond of him being her familiar, involves having a kiss with the familiar, he is quite shocked at why they do it. In the anime, he also could not identify nor understand the language the students were speaking, but after Louise attempts to cast a silence spell on him that fails, he could understand and communicate with others as though they were speaking Japanese. It is not clear whether he was actually gifted with full knowledge of their language, or whether the misfired spell was similar in principle to a universal translator. This was not the case in the light novel though, where he does understand their language; like the names of the characters, the language spoken by them is also French[2].

There are Runes inscribed into Saito's hand as a result of his being bound to Louise. They read geboundolf or Gundolf meaning Gandalfr (ガンダールヴ, Gandāruvu?). These runes glow when his Gandalfr powers activate. As a Gandalfr, Saito has the ability to use any object that was made with the intent of being used as a weapon at an extremely high level of skill. He also becomes significantly stronger, faster and tougher. Even weapons that he had never touched before, such as an M-72 rocket launcher and a World War II Zero Fighter, can be instantly understood and utilized. This physical augmentation fades more or less instantly when the he stops using the power, which can result in him falling unconscious if he'd been wounded previously. That he can only use items specifically crafted for the purpose of weapons was revealed by Derflinger after a failed attempt to use an ornamental sword. It has not been made clear whether Gandalfr powers could be used in conjunction with purely magical weaponry such as a wand or a staff. Even with these abilities he doesn't defend himself at all against Louise's constant beatings. The series constantly implies him being a pervert and sometimes he does think exactly like one, but justifiably, he is a young single guy who isn't married to anyone. Louise just enforces an ownership type arrangement over Saito implying she is owed Saito's feelings. It is later revealed that Saito has feelings for Louise and even says it openly to her. Saito also has a bit of a troublesome and somewhat complicated tendency of getting involved with women. Strange and oddly sexual things happen when he seemingly becomes intimate with another girl. A few examples are when Kirche or even Siesta try to gain his attention, by mostly sexual seduction. When he meets or speaks to an attractive girl, he is often only noticing her chest in a few instances. This is actually one of the main reasons why Louise treats him so poorly as he is expected to be perfect in every way in her childish mindset. But no matter how much Louise scolds him or whips him, he never seems to learn his lesson and reverts to his somewhat perverted ways like it was a bad habit.

Although he acts a bit perverted at times, this does not mean that he does not think of Louise. Similar to how she feels whenever he is becoming intimate with another girl (specifically with large breasts) Saito can get very upset when it comes to Louise and other men. He dislikes Julio for his "snobbish" interest in Louise, especially since he is adored by all the other young girls in Tristain Academy. He becomes extremely jealous and calls him a bastard whenever he tries to touch Louise or gain her attention. He also becomes upset he hears of Louise being married off to someone else. When his friends dragged him into a hole to peep at the girls while they were bathing, he was extremely protective of Louise and stopped them before they saw her naked. This is definite evidence of his strong feelings for Louise.

His partner, the talking sword Derflinger, was also the partner of the Gandalfr from six-thousand years ago. His advice and comments never reflect well on Saito. Saito protects Louise because he is her familiar, and it is later shown that he has feelings for her as well, claiming "All that he is good at is protecting her". He is revealed to be a Gandalfr, a familiar who exists to protect a Void Wizard as they cast their spells. Even when this fact becomes known to Louise, she still physically assaults him, while Saito is seen often shrugging it off as his fault. Saito was given the nickname "Our Sword" by the head cook episode three, where Louise takes Saito into town to purchase a weapon for him, which happens to be the legendary sword Derflinger. By the beginning of the third series, the magical runes on Saito's hand mysteriously disappear, and Saito's position of Gandalf is in question. He regains them when he is re-summoned by Louise. With the return of runes, Saito is knighted and given a hero's welcome at the Academy. Saito is named after Gennai Hiraga who is an Edo period Japanese scientist, and his name is written as "ability man". [3]

Tristain Academy of Magic

-Students

--Kirche
Voiced by: Nanako Inoue

* Familiar: A salamander, Flame
* Age: 18
* Height: 171 cm (5'7")
* Three Sizes: 94/63/95
* Favorite Food: Baked Bird of Paradise
* Hobbies: Solving Jigsaw Puzzles
* Special Skills: Playing the Harp
* Hates: Rain and Louise
* Full Name: Kirche Augusta Frederica von Anhalt Zerbst
* Runic Name: Subtle Heat
* Magical Affinity: Fire

Louise's classmate. She is from a Germanian military background. She attends the Academy, rather than a local school, because of the bad reputation she had gained for her misbehaviour in her homeland. Her parents tried to marry her off to an older man to improve the family's reputation. Instead, she came to the Academy. She has dark skin and a large bust. She is fully aware of the effect her looks have on men, and uses them to her advantage. Fire magic is her specialty--drawn from her strong passion for love. The territory she is from has long since had a dislike for the La Vallière family and she enjoys making fun of Louise. She is flirtatious and has dated (and, heavily implied in the anime, "slept with") many of the academy boys, but is especially smitten with Saito. Often her affection for him leads to him getting punished by Louise. By the third series, her interest in Saito seems to have diminished and her affections now appear to be directed toward Colbert. In addition, she seemed to rather have softened a bit towards Louise, though, in only critical situations. Her name means 'Church' in German language - which could be a hidden joke due to her role as a temptress and not a maiden of virtue.

--Tabitha
Voiced by: Yuka Inokuchi (Japanese), Jennifer Alyx (English)

* Familiar: A Wind/Rhyme(revealed in season 3) Dragon, Sylphid
* Age: 15
* Height: 142 cm (4'8")
* Three Sizes: 68/49/67
* Favorite Food: Hashibami Grass Salad
* Hobbies: Reading
* Special Skills: Gambling with Dice
* Hates: Ghosts
* Runic Name: Blizzard
* Magical Affinity: Wind

Tabitha is a quiet girl who is a classmate and the best friend of Kirche. She is also Louise's classmate. Throughout the series she is almost always reading a book and is usually seen with a large curved staff, which she uses in place of a wand. She does not allow any emotion to show on her face, says little about herself and and often does not respond to questions. Alternately, she may give neutral and incomplete answers, such as 'Don't know'. The name Tabitha is an alias; she is in fact Charlotte Helene Orléans, daughter of the King's murdered brother, and the rightful heir to the throne of Gallia. During the second season, it was explained that Tabitha's mother had gone insane due to the effects of a particularly potent water spell that had initially been meant for her. However, her mother drank the water before Charlotte could, in an attempt to spare her. The name 'Tabitha' belongs to a doll given to Charlotte by her mother. In the series, she is seen viewing the doll as her daughter, and her real daughter as a mere outsider who threatens to tear the family apart. Charlotte is studying at the Academy under an alias for to keep her out of the way. Percerin, the family's butler claims it was the event of her father's murder and her mother's madness that drove a previously lively and open Charlotte to become introverted. Her specialty is wind magic. She is also a chevalier knight, which is the lowest rank of knight (though given that both Anies and Saito also have this title and are ranked as the queen's knights which is a very high rank, this might only apply in her own country). By the end of the third season, she starts to get rather close to Saito following what she perceives to be an act of heroism after he rescues her, much to Louise's annoyance.

--Guiche
Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai

* Familiar: A Giant Mole, Verdandi
* Age: 17
* Height: 175 cm (5'9")
* Favorite Food: Soúffle
* Full Name: Guiche de Gramont
* Runic Name: Bronze
* Magical Affinity: Earth

Guiche is Louise's classmate who, despite being in a relationship with Montmorency and apparently in love with her, is a conceited playboy who cannot decide which girl he really desires. He always carries an artificial rose with him, the stem of which is his wand. He is a braggart and likes to draw attention to himself, often using the rose as a flamboyant prop. He also likes to dote upon his familiar, a giant mole named Belldandy. As his familiar indicates, his specialty is earth magic. He is mostly absent during the second season because he left the academy to join the military service.

--Montmorency
Voiced by: Mikako Takahashi

* Familiar: A Frog, Robin
* Age: 16
* Height: 166 cm (5'5")
* Three Sizes: 80/58/79
* Full Name: Montmorency Margarita la Fère de Montmorency
* Runic Name: Perfume
* Magical Affinity: Water

Like most Tristain nobles, she has a great deal of pride. She is Louise's classmate, has feelings for Guiche, and is skilled in creating various potions, including a prohibited love potion. She also had once made a contract with a Water spirit.

--Tiffania Westwood
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
A well endowed half-elf who Saito remembered as "the big-breasted Elf who saved his life" when he was about to be killed by Albion's massive forces in the last episode of the second season. She is implied to be a void user in the second episode of season 3. She is also the cousin of Henrietta (which gives her royal status), her father being the brother of Tiffania's father. She also seems to know about something about the four Void Familairs as she was singing about Gandalfr (Saito who she refers to as the left hand of god) and Vindalfr (the right hand of god) the song's melody was the same as Joseph's (the third Void user) music box. She also has feelings for Saito. While her magical affinity is not known, it seems that, as a forest elf, she possesses knowledge of life magic and restorative magic, shown by her ability to wipe memories.

--Beatrice
Voiced by: Ayumi Tsuji
As confirmed by the June edition of Newtype 2008, Beatrice will appear in season 3 of the anime. Her full name is Beatrice Yvonne von Guldenhorf. Her first appearance was in the fourth episode. In it she was using her position of Grand Duchess to bully students, including Tiffania for wearing a hat in her presence, being more popular than her, and having ample breasts. Upon learning Tiffania was half-elf, she tried to have her boiled in water, under the guise of punishing a heretic, since elves have a different religion than humans. It was later revealed she had no such authority to do this and was stopped by Louise before Tiffania was put in the boiling water. Tiffania then asked if they could be friends. Beatrice is followed around by three girls who help her bully people and are generally agreeing with her due to her title. It seems at the middle of the series, Beatrice and her three friends have somewhat become Tiffania's fans. In Episode 7, all four of them masquerade as Tiffania and, at the end of the series finale, seem to get rather jealous when Tiffania and Siesta share a hug.

-Commoners

--Siesta
Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English)

* Age: 17
* Height: 162 cm (5'4")
* Three Sizes: 83/60/85
* Favorite Food: Peach-Walnut Bread
* Hobbies: Napping
* Special Skills: Cooking, Maid
* Hates: All creatures that have lots of legs, corrupt nobles

A maid at the academy. Her hometown is Tarbes, Tristain and is the eldest of eight children.[4] She loves Saito, and treats him very kindly, and is willing to do a lot of things to defeat her "rival" Louise for the love of Saito. She seems to know how Saito is treated, which could be what makes her so aggressive to take him away from Louise. She truthfully thinks to herself that she would make Saito much happier. It is revealed during the latter part of the first season that Siesta is actually a descendant of a Japanese Naval Ensign and pilot of a Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter from World War II, which explains why she has hair and eyes like Saito's. In the second anime season, she confesses her love to Saito and kisses him on the lips. In the third season of the anime after Saito gains the title of knight she is made his servant, much to Louise's annoyance. Her attitude has changed somewhat by allowing Saito to get whipped when it suits her as well as purposely doing things that would bring it about as well.

-Teaching staff

--Osmond
Voiced by: Takeshi Aono

* Familiar: A Mouse, Motsognir

The elderly, white haired headmaster of the Tristain Academy of Magic, known for his lecherous behavior. He enjoys smoking and using his mouse familiar to find out what kind of underwear Longueville is wearing. Despite first appearances, it is obvious he is a very smart and powerful mage. He is one of the people trusted by Queen Henrietta. In the first season, his life was saved 30 years prior by a displaced American soldier from the Vietnam War. Seeing his rocket launcher kill a dragon, Osmond dubbed it the 'Staff of Destruction.'

--Longueville
Voiced by: Akiko Kimura

* Age: 23
* Magical Affinity: Earth

Osmond's attractive bespectacled secretary, who is often the target of his lechery. She becomes angry and violent at his behaviour. She is later revealed to be from a family of nobles who lost their rank, which enables her to use magic. She is also revealed to be Fouquet, the thief who broke into the school (though nobody knew it at the time). She works with Wardes in the first season. She is later defeated by the combined efforts of Guiche, Tabitha, and Kirche; but she escapes the battle. She is also known as Matilda of Saschen-Gotha.

--Chevreuse
Voiced by: Noriko Suzuki

* Runic Name: Red Clay
* Magical Affinity: Earth

A professor at the Tristain Academy of Magic.

--Colbert
Voiced by: Takuma Suzuki

* Runic Name: Fire Serpent
* Magical Affinity: Fire

A professor at the Tristain Academy of Magic that has interest in history. He also showed interest in technologies from Saito's world, such as the Zero fighter and spent a lot of time studying it. He also helped reproduce enough gasoline to fuel the airplane. It is revealed that he was the captain of mage troops sent to burn Agnès' village years ago, and also the person who rescued her out of there, when found out the village wasn't "plagued". It is strongly shown according to the series he expresses a hatred of war as well as the fact so many young people have to risk their lives of them. He shows certain envy of Saito's world upon discovering modern Japan is not ravaged by war or conflict. He reveals himself as the Flame Snake in episode 9 of the second season; and is fatally wounded when protecting Agnès. Colbert reappears in the third season of the anime riding on-board a massive airship, when he saves Saito and Louise from Sheffield and her minions. In the anime, it's later revealed that in reality he didn't die but in order to look like it, Tabitha casted a spell on him to look like he had died. After he faked his death, it's revealed that he has been living in Kirche's home. With funding from her rich family, he builds a giant airship. Like Saito, Colbert is very uncomfortable with Kirche's affections toward him, as he believes that teacher and student should not be involved in a relationship.

In the novels, Tabitha didn't cast a fake death spell on Colbert, instead, Kirche tricked Agnès into thinking that he was dead. In reality, he only fell unconscious due to his wounds. Louise and Saito were not present during the academy invasion in the novels.

Tristain

-Henrietta
Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi

* Age: 17
* Height: 158 cm (5'2")
* Three Sizes: 84/59/85
* Favorite Food: Horn-sheep Soup
* Hobbies: Disguising
* Special Skills: Dancing, especially to the melody of "Fairy's Lunch"

* Magical Affinity: Water

The Princess of Tristain. She is loved by her nationals and is also an old friend of Louise. Later, she becomes the queen of Tristain and decides to defend Tristain from the Albion invasion after the assassination of the Albion prince. She also seems to have developed an affinity for Saito over the course of both seasons. While at first she is presented as your stereotypical princess, her character later grows to show her struggles with the war. She also was in love with Wales and was devastated over his death. This was later used against her in a kidnapping attempt. Recently, in season three, it is shown that she has, or has been developing feelings for Saito. Two clear examples of this are when she nearly kissed Saito at the Sleipnir Ball, and how she refused to allow him to go to Gallia because it was too dangerous. However she has also stated to Louise that she does not know whether this is a rebound from Wales or not, whether she is simply loving the next person she sees, or truly falling for him. These events happened in episodes 7 and 8.

-Wardes
Voiced by: Tomoyuki Shimura

* Age: 26
* Full Name: Jean-Jacques Francis de Wardes
* Magical Affinity: Wind

Wardes is Captain of Tristain's Griffin Knights and Louise's former fiancé. When he was younger, he often met Louise, who was feeling down after being compared to her sisters. He is a highly skilled swordsman as well as mage. He is later revealed to be evil as he betrayed Louise and attempts to mind control her in marrying him (Because of this, many people think he is pedophile, although the correct term would be ephebophile, and both the novel and anime implies that he is aware of Louise's potential as a Void Mage and interested in her primarily for that reason). He then kills the Prince of Albion when his attempt is revealed.

-Agnes
Voiced by: Michiko Neya

* Age: 23
* Full Name: Anges Chevalier de Milan

Captain of Tristain musketeers in service of Henrietta. She's shown as a military woman who's very strict in discipline. She also is shown to hate Mages, especially those who used fire element. Even though her feelings on mages is known, she doesn't do anything to defend Saito due to misunderstandings by Louise that happen in front of her. Agnes often emphasized that mages should not become dependent of their magic, because in battles, there will be no time to cast spells before the enemy's swords and guns. At one point she kisses Louise to provide cover when Louise gasps while the two of them are evesdropping on a pair of conspirators. The kiss she gave Louise and the commentary Siesta made about her implies Agnès is a lesbian, although she is most portrayed as being uninterested in sexual pursuits and only worried about fighting and revenge. She first appears in the second season. In the third season, upon finding Colbert was alive, she gives up her want for vengeance, deciding to end the hatred so his students wouldn't hate her for killing him.

-Eleanor
Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue

* Age: 27
* Full Name: Eleanor Albertine le Blanc de la Blois de la Vallière

Eleanor is Louise's blonde oldest sister. She inherited her father's personality, which is stronger than Louise's own personality and is possibly the person Louise learned her sadistic tendencies from since she also looks down on common folk and uses a whip on Saito. She appears in the second season.

-Cattleya
Voiced by: Kotomi Yamakawa

* Age: 24
* Magical Affinity: Earth
* Full Name: Cattleya Yvette la Baume le Blanc de la Fontaine

Cattleya is Louise's older sister. She is physically weak from chronic illness. She has a gentle heart and Louise yearns for her. She also has a large bust, something that Saito immediately noted. She appears in the second season and is often seen with a variety of small animals.

Scarron runs the pub Miwaku no Yousei. He has feminine-speech and feminine-gestures despite muscularity, and workers call him not "master" but "ma madamoiselle". He also has a tendency to call out "Tres Bien!". Also uncle of Siesta.

Gallia

-Joseph
Voiced by: Jūrōta Kosugi
The current king of Gallia and Sheffield's master as well as Tabitha's uncle. Considered to be cold-blooded amid his hunger for power, it's revealed that he killed Tabitha's father and was behind the potion that drove Tabitha's mother to go insane.

-Sheffield
Voiced by: Masako Katsuki
Sheffield is a mysterious beauty. Officially, she is a Cromwell's secretary, however she is the true leader of the Reconquistadors. She is the main antagonist of the third season. She is also one of the 4 Familiars of the Void, known as Mioznitnirn, or Brain of God. She has revealed her master's name to be Joseph, the current King of Gallia.

Albion

-Wales
Voiced by: Masashiro Yamanaka (Japanese), Jonathan Koontz (English)

* Full Name: Wales Tudor
* Magical Affinity: Wind

Prince of Albion and Henrietta's cousin. He and Henrietta had a romantic relationship, but is faced with their status as cousins. His vow to the water spirits is to one day be able to show his feeling to Henrietta without needing to hide it from the public. He is killed by Wardes and in the second season, revived to abduct Henrietta to Albion but killed again.
Wales is a triangle wind mage, and in the second season, he showed that nobles of royal heritage can combine their magical power with other royals and create power of a hexagram mage.

Cromwell
Voiced by: Jirō Saitō

* Full Name: Oliver Cromwell

The leader of the Reconquistadors who is responsible for the war. He is also the one who gave the orders to Wardes to kill the Prince of Albion. After he was arrested by Tristain he was killed in his cell by Sheffield.

Romalia

-Julio
Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa

* Full Name: Julio Cezare

A knight from the Holy Empire of Romalia sent as transfer student to Tristain Magic Academy. He has the Moon Eyes, as his eyes are heterochromic - one red, one blue, like the two moons of Halkeginia. Julio is sent by Romalia's Pope as his support for Henrietta's expedition to Albion, now in political strife after the fall of the royal family followed by the death of Reconquistador's leader, Cromwell. Although not a mage, Julio is a dragon knight and expert swordsman. During his duel with Saito to win Louise's kiss, Julio could easily win against Saito—who doesn't use Gandalfr's skill, but he let Saito win to tease him. He has beautiful looks and a personality that grants him popularity among girls. He can be considered a replacement for Guiche after his depart to the military service because he is similar to Guiche in looks - however, Julio is worldy, as opposed to the vain, foolish Guiche, and hardly had to exert effort to charm most of the female students in the Academy. There had been several hints in the novels that Julio is the Vindalfr, the right hand of god.

Others

-Fouquet
Voiced by: Akiko Kimura
A triangle mage who uses a giant golem made of earth to steal magical valuables. Her acquaintances often refer to her as Fouquet, the Crumbling Dirt. It is revealed that Fouquet and Longueville are one and the same. Fouquet is actually Matilda of Saschen-Gotha. Wardes is revealed as a traitor and an ally to Fouquet, the Crumbling Dirt.

Familiar

-Sylphid / Irukukwu
Voiced by: Satomi Arai(Sylphid) / Yuka Iguchi (Irukukwu)
Sylphid is a female rhyme dragon and Tabitha's familiar. Her real name is Irukukwu. She looks like a mother or a older sister of Tabitha when she is the human form, but she refers to Tabitha as "Oneesama" that means a older sister. While she is sensible, she is sometimes childish.
